Sports star in great mourning: Baseball legend's son dies aged just 14

Tampa (USA) - He was only 14 years old: The youngest son of baseball player Brett Gardner (41) died unexpectedly on Friday, the family announced.

A statement from the former Yankees member and his wife, Jessica, said the 14-year-old Miller fell ill "along with several other family members while on vacation." No further details were given.

"We have so many questions and so few answers at this time, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep on the morning of March 21," the Gardners said in their statement, according to TMZ .

"Miller was a beloved son and brother, and we can't imagine our lives without his infectious smile. He loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, his family and his friends. He enjoyed life to the fullest every day," the family wrote.

The sudden and unforeseen death of the 14-year-old also caused great consternation in the sports world . The New York Yankees team expressed their grief and condolences on their X-Channel.

"Our hearts are heavy and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of Miller Gardner's passing," reads the Major League Baseball team's condolence statement. "Words feel insignificant and inadequate when it comes to describing such an unimaginable loss."

"We join Brett, Jessica and Hunter in mourning the loss of Miller, who had a twinkle in his eye, an outgoing and spirited personality, and a warm and loving nature," the Yankees shared. "Our love for the Gardner family is unconditional and we will offer them our continued support. May Miller rest in peace."
