USA - Clem Burke , the long-time drummer of the legendary US band Blondie , has died at the age of 70.

The band has announced the sad news of the death of its beloved member on Instagram .

According to the moving statement, the musician succumbed to cancer. "It is with deep sadness that we announce the news of the passing of our beloved friend and bandmate Clem Burke after a private battle with cancer," the band shared.

"Clem was not just a drummer, he was the most important part of Blondie. His talent, energy and passion for music were second to none. His contribution to our sound and success is immeasurable," they paid tribute to his musical influence.

The group also expressed their deepest condolences to Clem's family, friends and fans.

Blondie became famous in the New York punk and new wave scene and celebrated international success with worldwide hits such as "Heart of Glass", "Call Me" and "Atomic".

The 70-year-old has been an indispensable part of the band since it was founded in 1974 and has played a key role in shaping its unique sound.
