A seven-year-old boy has died as a result of this cruel act and two people are in a critical condition.

As the New York Post reports, Jordélia Pereira Barbosa (35) is said to have bought the chocolate eggs in a supermarket in Brazil and poisoned them herself.

She then delivered the Easter "surprise" to the new partner of her former partner, Mirian Lira (32).

According to the Daily Mail, the 35-year-old enclosed a note that read: "With love, to Mirian Lira. Happy Easter."

When she received the gift, she shared the sweets with her children, 7-year-old Luis Silva and 13-year-old Evelyn Fernanda.

Unfortunately, the youngest of the two children did not survive the incident. It is not yet possible to say exactly what caused the boy's death.

Last Thursday, Jordélia was arrested by the local police after officers discovered an invoice for the chocolate eggs.

The 35-year-old then admitted to having bought them, but denied having poisoned them.

The officers also found two wigs, scissors, cards, a saw knife and an unknown substance on her person.

"There are several pieces of evidence that clearly point to this woman being the perpetrator of the crime. The police will continue to work to strengthen this evidence (...) and bring her to justice for this barbaric crime," a police statement said.

The gruesome act is said to have been committed out of jealousy, according to investigations. This is also the second attempt by Jordélia Pereira Barbosa to poison the 32-year-old.

A similar incident occurred back in December: a woman poisoned a cake with arsenic before giving it to six of her relatives.
