Shock on entry: Man has to pay almost 500 euros because of a banana

USA - TikToker Dylan O'Byrne traveled back to the United States from Southeast Asia a few weeks ago. A short stay in Germany proved to be his undoing.

Because, as the New York Post reported, he made a devastating mistake during a stopover.

When he later landed in New York, he was asked at customs if he had anything to declare. Without giving it much thought, O'Byrne replied "No".

"I never buy anything when I travel - maybe a little souvenir for friends, but nothing I need to declare," he later said in a viral TikTok video.

But just a few minutes later, he was stopped again by officers. Police dogs sniffed his luggage and the officers asked him if he had brought anything "forbidden" with him.

Shortly afterwards, the dogs sat down next to his suitcase - the sniffers had struck!

However, the officials didn't have to search for long, as the culprit was on his suitcase: a banana!

During his stopover in Germany, O'Byrne had taken it from the lounge in case he got hungry during the flight.

The police took his passport, carried out an identity check and then told him that he would be fined.

"I thought to myself: 'Are they serious?' 'They're joking, right?" says the American. But no - when he checked at home, he found out that bringing a banana can lead to a fine of the equivalent of around 480 euros. The reason: the US Department of Agriculture has banned the import of certain foods due to pest and disease risks.

The TikToker is also threatened with exclusion from Global Entry - a US Customs and Border Protection program that enables faster entry procedures for trustworthy travellers.

It remains to be seen whether O'Byrne will actually have to pay the fine. Now he can only hope!
