New Zealand names "ugliest" sea creature fish of the year

New Zealand - The blobfish is considered the "ugliest fish in the world". But that hasn't stopped New Zealand from giving this sad-looking animal the "Fish of the Year" award.

Instead of a skeleton or scales, the blobfish only has a soft body and flabby skin.

According to aBBC report, the ugly sea creature achieved a surprising 1300 out of 5500 votes in the poll.

The blobfish first came to global attention in 2013 when it was named the mascot of the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. The animal with the jelly-like body measures around 30 centimetres in length and lives at a depth of 600 to 1200 meters below sea level.

This is actually the reason why the fish looks like a sad pudding. In the depths where it is normally at home, there is great pressure due to the enormous masses of water.

When the blobfish is pulled to the surface by anglers or other things, its body deforms due to the sudden change in water pressure.

Blobfish is an endangered species

Kim Jones, co-director of the Mountain to Sea Conservation Trust - the organization that awarded the prize this year - said in an interview: "In the end, it was a close neck-and-neck race between two quirky deep-sea creatures, with the unusual beauty of the blobfish helping to win over the voters."

Unfortunately, there is also bad news. The blobfish is an endangered species . Deep-sea trawling in particular is putting it under severe pressure.
