As reported by"Krone", ENT specialists from Graz have treated an extremely unusual case that is unprecedented in medical practice. A "unique clinical scenario", according to the doctors

A 42-year-old woman went to the emergency room due to a sudden onset of tinnitus and an unpleasant foreign body sensation in her ear.

The cause of the symptoms was quickly found: A live ant had crept through a hole in the eardrum and into the patient's middle ear.

Given the unusual position of the insect, treatment was very complicated. Initial attempts to remove the ant under local anesthetic were unsuccessful.

The doctors therefore decided to operate on the woman under general anesthesia.

The procedure was successful and the insect was removed without complications. The Austrian woman was able to leave the hospital the very next day - her symptoms had completely disappeared!
