As the New York Post reported, human remains were found in a river in the US state of California 30 years ago.

At the time, the investigation was quickly closed after it could only be determined that it was the bones of a girl.

But now, several decades later, more modern tests have revealed that the bones were those of the then 13-year-old missing Laura O'Malley, as the police announced last Tuesday.

She had been missing since 1975. However, it is still unclear how the teenager died.

The case was reopened in 2019. At that time, however, it could only be determined that the girl was probably born in the 1960s and died between 1977 and 1984.

Somewhat later, genetic tests were carried out to identify possible family members - this finally confirmed that it was the missing girl.

The police said they were "very grateful" to have finally provided the "long-awaited answer for Laura's family".
