The cause is not yet officially known, but his death has triggered a huge wave of grief.

"We would like to inform our community that our beloved Boston Fawkes-Kotevski passed away on Thursday. Boston was an influential figure in Australian fencing through his time as a member of the Australian team in men's sabre, as a national and FCA referee and as a dedicated coach. Off the fencing track, Boston was a proud father and loving husband," the federation wrote in a statement on Instagram. Fawkes had celebrated numerous national and international successes.

His wife shared a heartbreaking photo of the two of them fencing on Instagram, as they both proudly show off their suits with the double name they have worn since their wedding.

Some Australian fencing athletes held up a fork next to their medals in his memory at award ceremonies after his death.

"Boston would have absolutely hated this much attention. I am so grateful for all the love and support shown to us and our family during this difficult time, I really appreciate it," his wife wrote on Instagram with a wink.

As Aleksandra is also a fencer, the two experienced many competitions together, the sport united them and they shared a passion.

Next Saturday, not only Aleksandra, but also his son and all his relatives will have to say goodbye to their beloved Boston. He will always live on in their hearts.
