Honolulu (Hawaii/USA) - It should have been one of the best times of her life - now it is overshadowed by a shocking criminal case: a pregnant woman had to be taken to hospital after being hit by a car.

As People reported, she was changing the tires of her car when, out of nowhere, another car came hurtling towards her.

The American woman was hit in the side, spun around and finally fell to the ground.

And as if that wasn't bad enough. A few moments later, she experienced something terrible: The man at the wheel of the crashed car was the father of her unborn twins, Justin Ahkuoi, of all people.

He got out of the car after the accident, insulted the expectant mother and told her that he had just killed their children. His victim reported this to the police who were called to the scene. A witness to the crime was able to confirm her statements.

The woman was then taken to hospital as quickly as possible and examined. Shortly afterwards, there was a sigh of relief: she had only broken her toe in the crash. She is currently recovering from the shock and her twins survived their father's attack unscathed.

The incident had already occurred on April 8 in the US state of Hawaii , but Ahkuoi was only charged on Tuesday, April 22. His victim was four months pregnant at the time of the incident.

The young man is currently in custody, his bail is set at 150,000 US dollars - the equivalent of around 132,000 euros - and will soon have to stand trial for attempted manslaughter.

Investigations into his motive are still ongoing.
