Pizzeria charges 118 euros for Hawaiian pizza: this is what's behind the bizarre price

Norfolk (UK) - For many pizza lovers, the topping is a real no-go, others love it: pineapple! The Hawaiian version has been on the menus of many restaurants for more than six decades. This is also the case at "Lupa Pizza" in the east of England. But the owners are now trying a daring trick to dissuade their customers from ordering the controversial dish.

"Big chef and little chef are ready to work their magic in the kitchen," writes the restaurant with this picture of its pizza chefs. However, they have never had to prepare the Hawaiian version before.

Invented in 1962 by a Greek in Canada of all places, Hawaiian pizza still divides opinion decades later. Many traditional Italian pizza bakers still don't put it in the oven.

But at "Lupa Pizza" in the British county of Norfolk, pineapple pizza has recently been added to the menu due to high demand. "Pineapple on pizza - love it or hate it? We're not so keen, but if you are, it's now on our Deliveroo menu for £100 [around €118, editor's note]," the restaurant announced on Instagram last week.

The pizza is advertised even more ironically on the delivery app's website: "Yes, you can have it for 100 pounds. Order the champagne too! Go on, you monster!"

For Francis Woolf, Quin Jianoran and Felix Rehberg - the owners of the pizzeria - this is obviously a fun way to offer customers what they want, but also to make their own opinions clear.

"We're not pineapple fans here and we don't think anyone else should be either," said Woolf in an interview with People on Tuesday . "But if people absolutely need pineapple on their pizza, then they should be prepared to pay £100 for it."

Pizzeria owner is not a fan of pineapple: "Not a suitable pizza topping"

The "normal" pizzas in the restaurant, which only opened last summer, cost the equivalent of around 14 to 24 euros - a significant difference.

Unsurprisingly, no one has yet taken up the expensive Hawaiian offer, as Woolf confirmed.

"We don't think pineapple is a suitable pizza topping and shouldn't be on it," says the pizzeria owner. "Tropical fruit doesn't belong on pizza and I suppose we wanted to make our stance clear by charging £100 for it."
