The Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates as well as the Sunda and Burma plates all meet in Myanmar. This is why earthquakes occur time and again, as was the case last week.

Earth tremors were even felt in Bangladesh, Vietnam, India and southwest China. In Thailand's capital Bangkok, a high-rise building under construction even collapsed, killing dozens of people.

In Myanmar itself, the number of deaths is still difficult to estimate. While German media speak of more than 2,000 victims, AFP, among others, reports that there have been at least 2,700 deaths - with countless people still missing.

The "Democratic Voice of Burma" reported on Monday that at least 3034 people had died. According to the newspaper, there are also more than 3,500 injured and hundreds missing.
