Aziz Ziriat (36) and Samuel Harris (35) were last heard from when they sent greetings to their families on New Year's Day. They were traveling in the northern Italian region of Trentino, as reported bythe BBC.

According to Rebecca Dimmock, the 36-year-old's girlfriend, they wanted to go on a "New Year's hike" in the Dolomites, moving from hut to hut. She described them both as experienced hikers.

Their absence was first noticed when they missed their flight home on January 6. Alpine Rescue and other organizations began search operations to find the missing men.

During a search with a helicopter today, Wednesday, the rescue teams found a body under the snow.

The body was found in an area where the cell phone signal of one of the missing persons had previously been located. Search teams had previously found rucksacks and equipment in a nearby refuge.

The exact circumstances of the accident are still being investigated. The identity of the lifeless body has not yet been revealed.

A meticulous search is still underway for the second of the men. Dog teams with special training for searching in avalanches are also being used.

Relatives are cared for in Italy

Family members of the two hikers also traveled to Italy immediately after learning of the accident . They are currently being looked after by a team of psychologists.

The last thing Ms. Dimmock received from her boyfriend were a few photos of the mountains. He also told her that his cell phone would "soon give up the ghost". In fact, a short time later, no more messages arrived.
