He was only 16! Second-league professional hit and killed by train
Vinkovci (Croatia) - He had his whole life ahead of him! Croatian soccer is mourning the loss of young player Karlo Geljić, who died in a tragic accident at the age of just 16.
"What you have deep in your heart cannot be lost through death. Dear Karlo, rest in the peace of God," the second division club HNK Cibalia Vinkovci, where the professional was under contract, confirmed the death of the young Croatian - and added a black and white picture of the deceased on social media.
The national soccer association Hrvatski nogometni savez (HNS) also announced the death of the young kicker in a statement on its official website - and expressed its "deepest condolences for this irreparable loss".
According to media reports, Geljić died early on Monday evening as a result of a train accident. On a railroad line between Vinkovci and Osijek in the north-east of the Balkan state, not far from the border with Serbia, an approaching train hit him at around 5.47 p.m. for reasons that have not yet been clarified, fatally injuring him.
This was reported by the national daily Večernji list with reference to the local police - and added that the investigation had already begun.

It is hoped that this will enable the exact circumstances of the death to be clarified. However, no further details were given. It is also still unclear whether the death was caused by a third party.
Geljić had played three times so far this season for the youth team of the city of around 30,000 inhabitants. He played his last competitive match on November 30 of last year, against league rivals NK Graničar Županja.
