The former Goldman Sachs manager is the current leading candidate of the Liberal Party in Canada. He could replace Justin Trudeau (53) as leader of the party and prime minister.

As reported by Inquisitr , Carney has now responded to Trump's threats to make Canada the 51st state of the USA, calling the US president the "Voldemort of comments".

Carney, who originally comes from a small town in the Northwest Territories, helped to survive the 2008 financial crisis as Governor of the Bank of Canada. As a politician, he therefore already enjoys a great deal of trust.

Should he become the new party leader, he would be faced with the decision to call a new election, as elections in Canada take place every four years and are already scheduled for October.

Carney's comments were well received on social media, which is not surprising given that Trump's threats have triggered a wave of patriotism in the North American country.

Trump's trade war triggers tough rhetoric in Canada

Canada's political parties are currently in a tight race in the polls.

Carney, who some already see as the certain winner of the election, emphasized that Canada "will not bow to any bully" and will win in the trade war just as it did in field hockey.
