After a life in captivity: Orca "Keto" (†29) is dead
Tenerife - Not once in his life was the male orca able to swim through the vastness of the world's oceans, as he was born in captivity. Now orca "Keto" has died at the age of 29.
According to the Tenerife zoo"Loro Parque", the killer whale died alone in his enclosure last Friday.
"He is part of the Loro Parque family, where he served for years as an extraordinary ambassador of his species, captivating everyone with his imposing presence and unique personality," the zoo wrote.
"Keto" was born on June 17, 1995 in the US state of Orlando.
After several stops at various zoos, the male orca finally arrived at his new home in Tenerife in 2006.
There he performed a few rehearsed tricks every day with his trainers.
Killer whale Keto died: cause of death still unclear
"Loro Parque" reports that the orca had already shown signs of malaise some time before its death, whereupon veterinarians and specialists were immediately called in.
"Despite intensive efforts and the exhaustion of all available resources, this sad outcome could not be prevented," it says.
According to reports from RTL, 'Keto' is the fourth orca to die at the zoo in recent years.
In 2021, it was the two females "Skyla" and "Ula", followed a year later by the orca "Kohana", who lost their lives at Loro Parque.
