In a video on her TikTok channel "klassykalexis", the owner of the house cat announced that Hoss had escaped outside over six weeks ago.
The incident had shaken the whole family. They searched for Hoss for days, but the more time passed, the more their hopes of ever seeing the cat again dwindled.
Fortunately, the cat's fate did not end badly. Hoss returned home of his own accord, but his time on the streets had clearly taken its toll on him.
"When we found him, he was tiny and weak," the owner told Newsweek. "We actually found him lying in our backyard. We were completely surprised because we had already lost hope."
To his owners' shock, Hoss came back with one ear dangling and a chunk of his tail missing. In the clip, he sits with his head down and looks dejected. He seems almost embarrassed to come home in such a bad state.

The family were horrified to see Hoss in this condition, but they immediately took the velvet paw to the vet. The cat is now doing well again.
"He's put on weight and muscle again," said his owner with relief. "His injuries have healed well."
With over 1.2 million views and 103,000 likes on TikTok , the video went viral. Viewers were delighted to see the cat's return, but were also shocked to see the injuries Hoss had sustained on the street.
"He'll never leave your side again," wrote one user, while another commented: "He looks so sad. Cuddles with the poor kitty."
A third user commented, "I'm sure he has some stories to tell."
