Crashed into a wall! Professional footballer trapped in car after accident
Lugano (Switzerland) - Great concern for Alexander Gerndt (38)! Today, Wednesday morning, the Swedish professional soccer player was seriously injured ina traffic accident in the south of Switzerland.
According to the police authorities in Bellinzona, the 38-year-old was driving towards Cadenazzo on Via Monte Ceneri at around 8.30 a.m. when he lost control of his car for reasons that are as yet unknown and subsequently crashed into a wall adjacent to the road.
The 1.88-metre-tall striker then came to rest with his car on its side - and had to be freed from the vehicle "using hydraulic pliers and a spreader", the police said.
The eight-time international suffered serious injuries as a result of the accident and had to be taken to hospital.
Meanwhile, Swiss first division club FC Lugano confirmed the tragic accident involving their own player in a statement on their official website: "In the accident that occurred in the last few hours, Alexander suffered serious injuries, but fortunately the situation is under control," said the club from the canton of Ticino.
"The large FC Lugano family expresses its solidarity with Alex and wishes him a speedy recovery," the statement continues.
The father of two has been on the pitch for the club's second team since January 2023. He had already played for the first team from 2017 to 2022, but moved to second-division club FC Thun at the end of July 2021 - where he had been under contract for one year.
