Dog startled by fireworks and hit by car
Liversedge (England) - Fireworks were the undoing of a small dog and its owner. Eleanor Duncan was walking her Cocker Spaniel "Meg" in the county of Yorkshire when it suddenly became loud.
The popping noises frightened the four-legged friend with the black fur, so that it quickly ran away. The area was searched for the furry friend for two days, with some residents even helping to keep an eye out for "Meg" until 3.30 a.m., reports the BBC.
The firework scare caused the animal to run into the street and be hit by a car. After around 48 hours, it was finally found with a broken hip, broken pelvis and significant injuries to its stomach.
A life-saving operation had to be performed on the furry friend. The owner will have to pay around 9,000 pounds (the equivalent of around 10,000 euros) in veterinary costs, which will be raised through donations.
The animal's condition was critical. However, the cocker spaniel is now on the road to recovery.
Why fireworks are set off in the UK on November 5
"I know everyone likes fireworks, but the effect it has now is not just for a few days, and it affects too many animals," warns Duncan of the dangers of rockets and firecrackers. The incident happened on November 5, a day known in England as Bonfire Night or Guy Fawkes Day.
On this date, bonfires are lit in the UK because an attack on the British Parliament was successfully foiled more than 400 years ago.
