The monkeys are loose. According to CBS, it is still completely unclear how the animals were able to escape on Wednesday night.

The Beaufort County police have been alerted, have set traps and are searching for the fleeing primates with thermal imaging cameras. So far without success - the monkeys remain elusive.

In the meantime, the authorities are calling on the public to keep windows and doors closed. The animals could get into houses, they say. Anyone who sees the monkeys should contact the police immediately.

As the local newspaper"Post and Courier" reports, it was not the first monkey outbreak at the problem lab. In 2016, 19 monkeys escaped. The animals were recaptured after six hours.

It is not known which species of monkey is involved. According to its own account, the privately operated research facility "Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center" on the outskirts of the small town of Yamassee conducts experiments on Javan monkeys, rhesus monkeys and capuchin monkeys on behalf of third parties.
