Nuclear danger? Injured in a fire at a nuclear submarine shipyard!
Barrow-in-Furness (United Kingdom) - Two people have been injured by smoke fumes in a fire at a nuclear submarine shipyard in northwest England!
"There is no nuclear danger", authorities reassured residents in a statement. The fire on the site of the defense contractor BAE Systems was reported at around 0.44 a.m. (local time) on Wednesday night.
The police spoke of a major fire at the plant in the small town of Barrow-in-Furness. There were no other casualties. The main building of the plant was evacuated. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Residents were temporarily advised to stay indoors and keep doors and windows closed.
Firefighters are likely to be on the scene with equipment for most of the day today, Wednesday, it said. Eyewitnesses told BBC of thick, black smoke and a metallic smell in the air.
According to the report, the boats built in the hall include four Vanguard-class submarines, which are part of the British Trident nuclear program. Four new Dreadnought-class nuclear submarines are currently being built there to replace the Vanguard submarines in the early 2030s.
