Almost 600,000 euros in donations had been collected for the Lion Rescue Center, which has now been opened.

According to the PA, a spokeswoman for the organization "The Big Cat Sanctuary" said that the lions had been neglected and mistreated in various ways.

Some of the big cats were suffering from the effects of shelling near their enclosures, while others were said to have been living malnourished in an apartment or being used for illegal breeding in private homes. Four of them had never set foot on grass before.

Lioness Yuna was rescued from a three by four meter enclosure with a concrete floor, the PA reported.

She was unable to stand when she was rescued due to a severe concussion caused by the shelling during the war.
