Edinburgh (Scotland) - In addition to " Toni " from Berlin and " Moo Deng " from Thailand, dwarf hippo fans can now also marvel at "Haggis" from Edinburgh.

Edinburgh Zoo announced this week that the little pygmy hippo was born last week.

Team leader Jonny Appleyard said: "Haggis is doing very well so far and it's wonderful to see her personality starting to show."

Incidentally, the little hippo lady got her name from a traditional Scottish dish consisting of various offal.

Pygmy hippos are an endangered species

In a statement from the zoo, Appleyard pointed out that the species to which Toni, Moo Deng and now Haggis belong is threatened with extinction. According to estimates by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (ICUN), there are an estimated 2500 of this species still living in the wild.

Despite all this, the team leader said it was wonderful to "now have our own little ambassador in Edinburgh to raise awareness of the challenges facing this species in the wild."
