Connecticut (USA) - Sad news from the "Mystic Aquarium" in Connecticut . It seemed as if baby seal "Chabby" was going to get better, but now the little howler has suddenly died.

As the aquarium announced on Monday via the social media platform Instagram , the little seal died of mesenteric torsion, a condition in which a part of the intestine twists on its own axis so much that an artery is pinched off.

"Chabby" was found two weeks ago on a street in the middle of New Haven, a city in the US state of Connecticut. The nearest body of water was hundreds of meters away. It has not yet been possible to find out why the young animal got so extremely lost.

The police officers took "Chabby" to the nearby zoo, where the little seal was to be gradually nursed back to health, but after initial small successes, the sad certainty came.

The aquarium wrote in its Instagram post: "Chabby presented to us with dehydration, malnutrition and mild pneumonia. His general condition improved quickly, so we were able to switch his diet to fish. But when we did, he developed digestive problems that we couldn't get under control."

In addition, some plastic particles were found in "Chabby's" stomach during the post-mortem examination.

Although these were not linked to the animal's death, they once again show how dangerous the pollution of the world's oceans is for its inhabitants.

The aquarium further wrote: "Our staff is proud that despite the tragic situation, we were able to give Chabby the best possible chance. The reality of working with stranded animals can be tough at times, but rest assured that Chabby was surrounded by love until the very last moment."
