Ever since the Belgian shepherd Baloo was hit by the car of a fleeing suspect in 2018, her story has inspired many people.

As BBC reports, the "four-legged friend" and his owner Mandy Chapman won the Kennel Club Hero Dog Award in the English city of Birmingham around a week ago.

This special award is presented as part of the Crufts dog show and honors exceptional dogs that stand out for their bravery, commitment or their special significance to people.

Since the serious accident, Mandy and her furry friend have been visiting schools, care homes and community groups to help people with mental health problems.

"Despite her disability and the serious injuries she has suffered, she has come through everything so well and finds joy in life every day - and gives others joy in life," says Mandy.

The eight-year-old dog can sense exactly when a person is in a bad way.

For example, she formed a special bond with a girl - Mandy later learned that the child was going through a difficult time.

"What Baloo has achieved, the courage she has shown and the support she now gives to others is extraordinary. The incredible bond between Mandy and Baloo and the work they do together is simply inspiring," said a member of staff at the dog show.
