It was supposed to be a short flight from the polar port of Sabetta to Novy Urengoy on the Yamal peninsula . But when the Antonov An-12BP turboprop aircraft touched down at 1.07 p.m. (local time), the left landing gear broke away, reports the Interfax news agency.

What followed was a skid across the runway, as a video released by the authorities shows.

The plane skidded uncontrollably across the runway, touched the asphalt with its wing and spun around. Sparks sprayed across the tarmac. The plane came to a halt in a snowfield.

There were no passengers on board. Fortunately, the crew of eight remained uninjured.

Antonov An-12BP makes a perfect break load in Yamal

The aircraft had more than 50 years under its belt and was put into service in 1970, reports URA. The four-engine turboprop last flew for the Russian cargo airline Atran. The airline specializes in flights to remote regions of Russia.

Just the day before, the ill-fated Antonov was involved in another incident, reports the URA news agency. Before landing in Sabetta, the crew reported problems with the engine and had to make several rounds over the airport until the problem was fixed and the plane could land safely.

Russian aircraft are repeatedly involved in serious incidents. In 2023, the pilots of an Airbus A320 with 167 people on board managed to make an emergency landing in a field in Siberia after problems suddenly occurred on board.

It later transpired that the pilots had miscalculated the amount of kerosene required.
